Knee Pain

I'm experiencing knee pain.

I'm 32, 5'10 and weigh around 165lbs.

I consider myself to be in decent shape.

Throughout my 20's and into my early 30's I've averaged 10-15mpw. (A rough guess.)

Before Monday, I was extremely sedentary for 25 days. No jogging.

I sat in a chair in a crouching position (I believe this unnatural posture has been the cause of my knee issue) for around 10 minutes on many of these days. (I've come to regret this.)

On Monday, I managed 30 minutes outside. My left knee was throbbing in pain towards the end.

On Tuesday, I managed 15 minutes with a lot of pain in my left knee again.

Yesterday and today I managed a few strides down the street before walking back home and calling it quits.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Where is the pain located in relation to your knee. Does it hurt all the time? While going up stairs? Down stairs? Etc.

Might be worth going to check in with a PT or a doctor

Hard to help without more info as knee pain is a pretty broad complaint. Does it hurt when you aren't running? How does the pain feel? (sharp, dull achy, ect.) Does it hurt to go up or down stairs? Any clicking, popping, or grinding? Did the pain appear gradually or suddenly? Any increases in mileage or change in training?

I feel it occasionally while walking around as my left foot leaves the ground.

It's not a sharp pain. It's more achy. No clicking, popping, grinding.

I haven't changed my training.

When jogging, I feel it as my left foot strikes the ground.

It sounds like Runner's Knee. You can keep running on it as long as it doesn't hurt. The knee will adapt to stress as long as you bring it on gradually. I would also ice it after running/walking.

I've had this many times. If you go to PT they will just give you lots of glute exercises and in my experience it will get better weather you do them or not. Just try to avoid running on a lot of hills, and speed work is bad.

I would recommend taking a couple of days off, and then return to running very gradually. Perhaps every other day for a couple of days. Going from completely sedentary to a high-impact activity such as running is a lot of sudden stress on your joints. Ease back into it and I think you'll be alright.

As mentioned above, could be a flare up of Patella Femoral Pain Syndrome (Runners Knee). Give it some R.I.C.E and then ease into it again, you should be good to go in a week.

I've had runner's knee in the past.

I did step ups (simply stepping up multiple times each leg on a set of stairs) for about a week and this helped.

I think I'm going to try it again.
