Can improve performance and will improve performance are two different things. Sure a stimulant could improve your performance, but it could also make you sick to your stomach, or just make you uncomfortable in a race. It affects everyone differently and is definitely something that needs to be tried out in a workout or low stakes race before using it regularly.
Bottom line is that it could improve your performance by 3%, but it isn't a guarantee by any means.
Hi, Nick!
I don't buy it.
Seems to be the real deal. Here's a very informative meta-analysis on caffeine & endurance performance:

Show me one legitimate study done on caffeine and physical performance where caffeine doesn't aid performance. Old old news.
Caffeine pills. Take one 40ish minutes before your race. Works wonders.
how do they figure out 3%?? Those #s are smaller than 3% unless you are world class, i mean say you run a 5 min mile-pretty average- thats 9 seconds, yet the chart has 6.7... which is a 3:43.33 mile... aka .2 seconds off the world record
I actually feel really good after having a voc tablet, i dont know about run gum or whatever, but if im tired in the morning and i wana go do a long run, ill take a voc tablet and i feel way better in the run and i sometimes take it before races, i usually dont have them regularly because they're expensive though.
I'm sure something like this is exactly the same as voc tab yet cost like 9 cents a tablet vs 1 dollar...
Tenuous claim not supported by facts.

Well, in any study you will likely have low or non-responders to the dose given in the study. There has been some evidence that caffeine can have a detrimental effect on performance in some, and this might be a gene issue.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22420682In this study (I cannot locate the one looking at poorer performance so it might be a subset in another study or could be the individuals in this study), the fast metabolizers got better but not by much
The analysis I referenced shows caffeine is more enhancing in an anhydrous state as opposed to coffee & other caffeinated beverages. A lot of people don't know that and think it's all the same.

Yes, of course not 100% will run faster on caffeine just like not all kids who eat candy all day will get cavities, but most all will. Who disputes caffeine is a performance enhancer? No one.

Agree...and the anhydrous form has been effective for me to just get out door with my myriad of chronic injuries (late 50's and running on barrowed time).
I used a few caffeine pills once before a race but never noticed a difference. Can anyone recommend the best way that it would be absorbed? Ex. pill, coffee, red bull, rungum?
Would I truly feel a benefit from it and drop substantial time off of my 5000m?

I chew rungum often and it kicks in the fastest i think. I feel the effects super quick and stronger than other sources. plus the act of chewing makes me feel more alert and awake.
I'm guessing if you are a regular coffee drinker, the effects will be minimal because your body has adapted to caffeine just for going to work/class.
now if you don't drink coffee, then take a caffeine pill, there is a better chance for a stimulus.
Why caffeine pill over gum?

To eliminate the middle man. Plus cost.
