Distance coach that everybody loves is retiring. HELP

Forgot to mention. I am only a sophomore so this could ruin my chances of getting a scholarship if I have a bad coach my last 2 years

He's retiring because you and the team are a disappointment to him.

Advice? Yes, relax. Things change. You can't decide anything until you know what comes next. No coach is the ONLY coach who knows what he's doing.

HS coaches do not get paid very well, and most people don't have their afternoons free, so the quality can vary a lot--regardless of the sport. See if your coach or another coach/teacher that you know will be on the interview committee for the new coach. Explain to them what you like about the current coach as a person and his workouts, and that these are important for the next person. You may have to express this through your parents and/or the team captains. Plan to read some books on running training this summer and be prepared to coach yourself or understand the "why" behind the workouts your current or future coach gives.

A sub 5-mile (for a male) isn't close to athletic scholarship consideration. That's great that you take your running seriously and that you want to improve to be able to run in college, but you'll need to set reasonable running goals (for time and place or advancement to post-season competition) with your coach and assess how each season goes afterward.

Why would workouts from a book be random? Seems like the exact opposite would be true.

Maybe you need a new English teacher.

Get parents and athletes on the hiring committee if there is one, or have a parent call the AD voicing their concerns over who the next coach will be.
