I ran my first college track 5k in my victory elite 2s, which top out at 5k and they were almost not enough for my calfs. But it depends on your foot strike I imagine. I strike midfoot, but if you heel strike or whatever you may be ok.
The faster you are, the better they will work for you. Spikes and how aggressive they are is more suited for a certain speed than a specific event. Think about it this way, should an elite running 4:20 pace for 5000m wear the same spikes as a high school girl running 7:00 pace for the 3200?
That's why some elite 800m runners wear sprint spikes rather than MD spikes. When you are running at 52 quarter mile pace, it doesn't matter if you're running only 400m or 800m, you're up on the balls of your feet and going through the same hip and ankle flexion.
