Letsrun travel advisors: should I intentionally miss my flight tomorrow without rebooking?

I'm traveling to the Cayman Islands tomorrow. I need to wire a bunch of money there to pay for the purpose of my trip. The bank is closed today because of President's Day and my bank requires my to walk into a branch in person to do the wire, which I won't be able to since my flight leaves before the bank opens. I can pay credit when I get to the Grand Cayman, but I'll have to pay a $450 foreign transaction fee imposed by Visa. To reschedule my flight to give me enough time to go to the bank will cost $400-500, so it's not worth it at all. So here's what I was thinking. I'll deliberately miss my flight so I can go to the bank, then show up at the airport an hour late and say "OMFG I had a flat tire." Many airlines will put you on standby for the next flight for a small charge or for free if you show up within two hours of when your shit leaves. Of course there is a risk that there will be no spots on the next flight, in which case I'll be really SOL. What should I do?

There is no a "flat tire rule." That is a misnomer because it's not a rule. It's a practice, or a courtesy. It's true that certain airlines extend a courtesy rebooking to those who show up at the counter within a short period after their scheduled flight has departed, usually ~2 hrs or so. It is at the discretion of the agents so they can insist you buy a new ticket or they can help rebook you on next available.

But non-United States airlines do not recognize this concept at all and you'll be SOL if you try this for example with Cayman Air.

How many flight from your town go to Grand Cayman a day? Probably 1 unless your in Miami or something.

If you are going to try that, I would call like 30min prior and say you cannot make it (due to whatever). That at least gives the airline a chance to accommodate another passenger. Might make them a little more understanding toward you.

I travel all the time and have never had a 450$ transaction fee imposed by visa. How much money do you need? Just go to an atm and get cash

Switching flights may cost you a $200 booking fee plus the difference in the cost of the new flight and your original one. Since prices increase at the date of departure approaches, your new flight will be more expensive than your old one.

How did you pull such a boneheaded maneuver?

When you received your notifications from your various brokerage accounts on Friday stating that the markets would be closed on Monday in observance of presidents day, didn't that get you thinking?
