Hello,
I am thinking about signing up for the Garden of Gods 10 mile race in CO June 11th. Has anyone ran it before? How's the course? How was your experience? I would love some input before I sign up for it.

The Garden 10 will be one of the most beautiful places you will ever run/race. The course is NOT easy. There will be a new start and finish area this year. It is well organized. There may not be 100 meters of flat in the 10 miles. Then there is the 6500' of elevation. Garden of the Gods Park was voted best free park in all of the US. Do it!
10 miles of up and down on asphalt roads at ~6400ft. Can be sunny - with no shade and warm, or not (overcast/cool).
I have never raced at altitude before, I don't train on a lot of hills but I tend to race really well on hilly courses. Is it more rolling hills or steep hills? How much slower is it than a typical 10 mile race?
It is HILLY. Practice running hard over very hilly ground. Its really going to be the altitude that beats the piss out of you if you live on flat ground now though.
The hills are long. You start for the first mile on more or less flat/rolling with a net downhill of maybe 50 feet over the first mile. Then you turn into the park and climb steadily for about 2.5 or 3 miles. Drop down a mile or so and then have a long grind of about 2 miles of climbing. The return is mostly down. Have run it a couple times and maybe 5-6 minutes slower than a flatter 10 mile race altitude. Probably add a couple minutes more if you are not acclimated. It's a challenge but a good event.
I don't have very much hills to run at all, but I have one I can continuously run hard up for 150-600 meters. I am a little nervous about the altitude, but I guess I'll plan to sign up for it. I looked at pictures, and it looks absolutely gorgeous.
Sign up, go for a run, enjoy the scenery and call it good.

Go out slow or the altitude will eat your lunch early on.
Yo!
I live in the springs, the GOG 10 mile is a hard very hilly race but a fun scenic one. I recommend it, but train for dem hills! It's rolling the entire time.
My normal 10 miler at altitude was like 10-20mins slower than this race, if htat helps you predict your time.
wow that's crazy, and you're accustomed to the altitude. I was also looking into Pikes Peak ascent as well.
Pikes Peak Ascent = your low altitude marathon time + 15-20 minutes.
I have only ran one marathon in poor conditions.
As stated, this course is a bear. Between the altitude & elevation change don't even think of it as a race. Get a good workout in. And even if you back off the pace early on, you'll be hurting by the end. Scenic? Meh. Maybe if you like looking at a bunch of rocks
I'm very competitive so I probably won't hold back much, I'll just take it as more of a challenge.

Hats off to my dad. He just ran a 1:42 Half Marathon and turns 75 in 2 months!
