I don't have the stats but I believe Norpoth ran 13:20 and Prefontaine was 13:22 or 13:23. Couple of comments:
1. Norpoth really is amazingly skinny, even for a distance runner.
2. It's remarkable how decisively Norpoth passed Prefontaine at the 200 meter mark; he went by as though Pre were standing still and didn't seemed troubled at the finish. British commentator Ron Pickering, while commenting on another race, noted that Norpoth ran 53 seconds for the last lap here. Norpoth really was a great runner - silver medal in the 64 Olympics at 5K, as well as multiple medals at the European Champs. I think he also ran 13:25 or 13:26 in the 60's, which was very fast back then.
3. More proof if any were needed that Pre, although a great runner, was a slight notch below the very best at the time. His 4th at the olympics was really a great performance for him - he beat Norpoth in that race, as well as Puttemans, and McCafferty, all of whom had faster PRs and probably better kicks (he also beat Bedford, who was arguably a superior runner, though maybe not as good a racer and who, along with Puttemans, was maybe a bit gassed after the 10K).
4. I'm not trying to $hit on Pre here - I think he was a great runner with a lot of charisma. As his bio noted, races with him in it were fast and exciting races and the crowds loved him for it. It's just that there were a lot of great runners at the time.
5. It looks like Dave Wottle wins the 800 here.
