Coach: "You're a 3200 runner" *Puts me in the 4x4* WTF?

Maybe he wants to develop your speed and use races as training...almost as if it's indoor season and you have ~3 months until you need to be running your best at your main distance.

This is outrageous. You should demand that you race a 3200m every day for the next 3 months. That is the sure way to get your 3200m time down.

I mean I have never raced a 3200 fresh. Always the 1600 beforehand. I've only raced the 32 like 3 times ever. I know for a fact I can drop at least 30 seconds if I race it fresh.

Then run the 32 and only the 32 in an invite.

Dual meets are training. It's great to win them and win a league title, but athletes are training through them and should be treating them as hard effort training days. Unless you're a freshman guy who just hit his growth spurt, you're not necessarily looking to PR every week.

Be glad you're not quadrupling 4/8/300H/4x4 and tell your coach you want to race the 3200 during an invite where you'll be able to get a fast time.

Whether you're physically running inside or outside wasn't really the point. What is today's date? What is the date of your state championship? Given the answers to these two questions, why do you feel that you should not currently be using meets as training?

EXACTLY. It's a solid speed workout for you. Honestly if you run the 32 every meet you may/may not improve. It's nice to lay off your main event & sharpen up with others events. Alongside your training too! I ran the 800m mainly but in dual meets I'll run the 16 & like 5 min later the open 400. Then the 400-800 as a workout & the 200 after an all out 400. Always ran the relay too

It was a distance-only meet so I think they changed the order around.

Last year I ran it fresh but I was slow. When I ran it after the mile I matched my PR.

my PR is an embarassing 12:03 but I think I am in shape for 11:20-25ish (my 1600 is 5:20)

Based off of no indoor, 16/32 rather than 15/3k, no 3200 relay, and 16 before 32, I'd hazard a guess at California.

A while ago I was coached by Tom Tinman Schwartz for a 2 mile. The hard workouts were pretty much only at mile pace.

I PR'ed bigly.

Literally every race I ran in California in all of high school had the mile before the two mile.

As a former coach, putting you in those events is something I would do on occasions. There are times when scoring points is what needed to do, thee are times when seeing what an athlete can do in other events and there are times when the meet is just being used as a workout. It's not about what kids want to do or think they should be doing...coaches have to look at the big picture. When I was a H.S. athlete, I basically just did whatever my coach told me to do and it worked out ok.
