It is possible that she was taking HCTZ for certain reasons but I'm dubious about the high blood pressure claim. She stated that she was rushed to the emergency room for high blood pressure, which I assume could be due to a hypertensive crisis (but I haven't studied this stuff for a while).
Does anyone else have a possible cause of extremely high BP warranting emergency treatment in a normal healthy female (aside from severe blood loss, pre-eclampsia, etc.)?
Looked up the drug in one of the databases and found it listed as banned very quickly so she is either stupid or lying.

There are longer articles that go into more detail. Essentially she was administered the medication and had not checked it thoroughly enough.
A 3 month ban seems about right.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2017/02/07/olympic-gold-medalist-dawn-harper-nelson-serves-suspension/97614922/Basically a useless ban. She will continue training and be back in time for trials and world's.
Imagine the fuss this site would be kicking up if she was Russian or Moroccan etc.
But if you're American its all okey dokey and please take a 'ban' that finishes just a couple of days before the US Indoors?
Whilst we extend the ban on an entire country to run past the outdoor Worlds?
urine idiot. All of you. First, quit calling it a "drugs" ban, unless she was taking multiple substances. It's a drug sanction.
Second, even an uneducated googler could figure out that african americans are at a significantly elevated risk of hypertension, and also incur more frequent hypertensive crisis. Hypertensive crisis is nothing to f*** around with, this is an ambulance, lights-n-sirens sort of thing.
Finally, yes I'm as skeptical as any for this sort of thing...but seriously? She has a medical episode (does anyone really think she rushed herself to the emergency room as a ruse to get a freaking diuretic?) and usada gives her 3mos, but cabada eats tainted meat, knowing that is a dicey proposition in MX, yet gets no sanction. Ridiculous.
She looks like a young James Brown.
James took drugs, as well.

Was he on HGH and anabolics?

A ban from competition is a "drugs ban". Lighten up Francis.

Are you aware of what the Russians did (and it was proven) to get that ban? Contemplate that idea for 15 seconds. Now do you see the difference? Now try to see if LetsRun will make a key for dumb people like you.
Dawn cleverly mentions that she was taken to the ER, where she was diagnosed with high BP.
She does not say that docs in the ER administered any drugs without her ability to first screen them.
She took a prescription drug that caused a positive test. Most of us will never know if she suffers from hypertension or was simply masking other PED use with a diuretic.
Whatever the case, she stands as another Kersee athlete caught in the web of a positive test. Coached by Bobby Kersee and represented by Emanuel Hudson.
Dirty athlete, dirty athlete support team. She will miss the meaningless indoor season and be back on the circuit come spring 2017.
Every athlete knows they're responsible for what they put in their body... so when she was administered the drug either at the hospital or by her doctor, why wasn't she immediately on the phone with USADA explaining the situation and requesting a TUE? This is inexplicable for a veteran athlete.
Why not be proactive? wrote:

But since she didn't request a TUE, it sounds like she didn't think she was doing anything wrong.
What I find frustrating about this, is Russia have been rightfully pinged for doping but the USA, and certainly certain training groups have a ridiculous number of athletes who failed tests. The 4x100m team in Rio was an awful sight until they lost their medal and I used to be a Tyson Gay fan.
There seems to be very little willingness to tackle cheats, if anything the really frustratng thing is that USA cheater always get light sentences. I think Seb Coe is scared to make banning countries on number of failed test (like swmming does) a thing because he's already shown a bias to the USA. Teh worst thing is that there are probably dozens of americans who are losing out due to these cheats. These light sentences are most of hardming clean US athletes from better success and earnings.

The entire success of American t&f is based on doping principally steroids so Americans are forced to wear blinkers.

So she takes a pill or an injection, and doesn't consult USADA. Tell me when she received her invitation to MENSA.
Amazing, only 3 months for a Westerner. Would be at least a year, probably two, for a Russian.
Are you aware of what the Russians did (and it was proven) to get that ban?
Yes, I am aware that nothing has been proven. All the McLaren "evidence" is now being rejected by IOC.

Probably. Have you ever seen Brown randomly do the splits and bounce back up? No warm-up and probably 50 plus years old.
You need some help to pull that off.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
Move over Mark Coogan, Rojo and John Kellogg share their 3 favorite mile workouts
Mark Coogan says that if you could only do 3 workouts as a 1500m runner you should do these
Red Bull (who sponsors Mondo) calls Mondo the pole vaulting Usain Bolt. Is that a fair comparison?
