DJ's still amazing with his 4:00 PB, but props to Hoey whom no one expected to beat Principe by this much. And he took off 9 seconds or so from his PB. How is that possible to cut down time that much this late in HS track season?

This late? It's January...
It's late-ish in HS track. Season ends mid- or late February.
DJ is a bit tired. Performance varies. He'll be back at it.
This is a much more appropriate and polite post on a relevant topic. Good job OP on having some basic decency.
No doubt! The kid is talented and can't wait to see what he does at Stanford. But really amazed by Hoey's PR, only because cutting 9 seconds at this stage is impressive in a high school kid.
Thank you. Saw the other thread and perplexed as to why anyone would hate on a kid who runs a four-minute mile.
I did not see or look for the splits but Hoey stayed back for much of the race appeared to surge for the last lap or so. DJ tried to hold him off for a second or so before giving up on matching Hoey's increased pace. I enjoyed watching the race. 9 second's off his time was great. That will definitely help him in being recruited if he has not yet committed.
Josh Hoey is only a junior
This ranks in upsets right up there with USA winning the Gold Medal in Olympic Hockey in 1980 and Buster Douglas beating Mike Tyson.
Also, this isn't a 9 second PR for Josh. He ran 4:11.9 as a soph last year in winning the Penn Relays mile. Although it is probably an indoor PR by 9 seconds

Not hating.
Just observing though.
Hoey, weird as his form is, creates a lot of torque on those big legs and can bring the speed at the end. I think he would beat DJ every time if the pace was only 4:10ish. Faster pacing earlier would have cooked Hoey but DJ didn't have it here.
Principie was fried for sure here (over racing!!), and I think his only chance at sub 4 now is going to be done in an elite race (like he did 2 weeks ago with Hunter). Problem is, if he goes and squanders himself at HS only heats and doesn't win in a kick, he may not still get invited for an elite heat. ------DJ is not like Slagowski was last year who could hit 1:48 without anyone around. DJ needs constant pacing with a perfect rabbit. Would love to see DJ, the Texans (Reed & Worley), McGorty, the Utah boys and now, Hoey all go at it sometime this year!

How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
