It looks like Lock Haven University is set to cut Men's Track & Field and Women's Swimming. Another one bites the dust.

Well you have to decide what is more important, a program that has produced some good athletes which have the school nice press or a 4-7 football team with 12 coaches.
A sport with one of the highest GPAs, highest retention rates, highest graduation rates, and LOWEST cost per student-athlete will be killed while a sport that is the opposite remains. Some years the LHU XC/TF team win more conference and regional titles that football wins games.
Coach Russell has built a phenomenal program there on a shoestring budget, raises a ton of money every year to fund scholarships, and is very active amongst the USTFCCCA and mentoring young coaches.
This needs to be bigger news. #savehaven

Didn't LHU get sued for gender discrimination for paying assistant football coaches more than all other female assistants in all other sports?
Sounds like their priorities haven't changed!
Any word if it's the entire XC/track program or just the track program?
LRC should be up in arms about this. However watch how few messages this thread gets. That is part of our problem right there. They do not see the correlation to the foundation of the sport.

This is unbelievable! They are at NCAAs every year for track and XC with many All Americans to boot. Some truly great runners have come from there! It really is a shame what poor financial management has done to NCAA athletics.
Some of these PSAC schools may no longer exist by this time next year, as PA Governor Tom Wolfe has begun exploring ways to merge and eliminate PSSHE schools.

Does it really matter? I mean who wants to be on the team if they only have XC?
This happens so often, I'm afraid its gonna happen where I went to school, if it does, I honestly might mail back my diploma
Show me the money.
No money? No program.

Easy enough I had to do this with a D2 administration decades ago. Show them how students you bring into the university, along with alumni donations and what the cost of the program actually is. Matter of economics and/or ignorance?
This is truly sad to see. Lockhaven has an excellent program which has produced outstanding runners. It is an outrage to see such a good program get terminated because of some moron's political agenda.

+1. This.

Exactly, except does he mean "gave the school nice press?" And it's not like their football team is just having a bit of a down spell. They're usually the second most automatic win on every other team in the conference's schedule and have been for decades. At least Mansfield had the good sense to stop beating the dead football horse and just bury it.
Sucks for them! Can't have it all.
Sorry, but where and what is the track powerhouse known as Lock Haven?

FOOTBALL is not a sport; it is an institution. It mobilizes the town on a Saturday afternoon in the fall. That is what football does at every level.

In Lock Haven? Have you ever been to a PSAC football game?

But less than mediocre football is better than no football at all. A university without a football team is essentially a community college.
