The American college system has evolved some crazy rules. Maybe there is some reason for them with big money ball sports, but for track and field?
Most small universities just aren't big enough to have half a dozen eligible people on the track team doing a session together.
In the UK, everyone trains together. Undergrad, postgrad, visiting students, the odd faculty member who ran, local town club. If you're the right level for a training group and you can make the right time of day, who cares?
Any "college coach" (I think we have two or three in the country) would be absolutely delighted to have the decent runners in town join in on a regular basis, because having a better group makes you better.
Oh, yes, and if you get a chance to come over as a postgrad, you can still complete for four more years.
