I'm a sophomore high school distance runner. Last spring, I ran 9:42 for 3200 and 4:35 for 1600. I was really pleased with freshman year and my most recent cross country season (this sophomore year) went pretty well too. I ran 16:03 for 5k even though my season was cut short due to a couple weird incidents that led to me going to the cardiologist (still figuring things out...). This winter season, I have been not been very satisfied with my progress. I ran two 4:41 1600s and just a few days ago I ran 9:58 for 3200. I want to run much faster and certainly faster than last spring. If it helps, The 3200 I basically ran alone leading wire to wire so I did not have a ton of competition. Also, in both my races I felt I didn't have much of a kick at all, I think I may be wasting it by surging to the front after starting out conservatively the first lap. I can't find my training log from last spring, but I believe I've had consistently higher mileage than last year, but it certainly hasn't been a large increase. If anybody has any advice or words of wisdom I would appreciate it.
