I am on the fence about whether to go get my PhD (in hopes of becoming a prof) or enter the professional world next year. (I am about to finish a Masters program). My job prospects are good, but money isn't a huge deal for me. What seems appealing to me about professorship is that 1. I love the subject(s) I'm studying, and 2. I feel there is more autonomy in the job versus working the traditional 9-5 office job - with a more flexible schedule, I feel like I can continue training at a high level (not to mention access to great facilities). I'm not fast enough to get a sponsorship but still am at the level where I feel I can get into some high-calibre meets (I'm an All American), but only if I have a job where it is easy to continue training the way I currently am. However, I don't know how much time research will eat into my schedule, plus I feel they work you into the ground until you get tenure.
Any college/universities professors have thoughts on what I wrote? If you could specifically comment on how realistic it would be to train at a high level when you are starting out that would be awesome.
