I'm very concerned the media is just making thinks up, especially the trusted media. NYT should just have better standards.

Did you even read your own post? It does not say that CBS contradicts the NYT. It only says that different sources explain the situation in a slightly different way.
Apparently, someone at the White House wanted to put a different spin on it and they talked to CBS.
But the story is essentially the same. Both sources agree that the godless Trump did talk openly about firing Mueller (though publicly, he has denied ever even thinking about it). Both sources also agree that McGahn took steps to stop him.
The main disagreement between the two sources is that the CBS source says McGahn did threaten to quit, but it was on an unrelated matter. The CBS source also points out that the order to fire Mueller was never a written order. But I'm pretty sure the NYT sources never said it was a written order either.
