I want some feedback here. There are a ton of opinions on this thread but I want to try this thought process out.
My premise is that the modern day Republican Party will cease to exist if it keeps operating the way it is now. By not denouncing Trump and by the way Republicans respond to sexual assault and racism (whether you agree with the claims made or not -- take your opinion out of it), they are not gaining any new voters. They are driving away women, young people, and people of color. What is the point in making Serena Williams being passionate in sport into a hot button Democrat or Republican issue where you have to take a stance based on party? It does not make the pro Serena crowd remotely interested in what your actual values are. Why blindly defend Kavanaugh? Does it really matter electing a justice who wants to overturn Roe? How does that keep women engaged with the party? Why not denounce sexual assault and elect a conservative justice who will do everything you want to see happen to keep markets free and open?
In the 2000 Presidential Election 30-49 year olds went 50-48 for Bush over Gore. In 2016, 45-64 year olds went 52-44 for Trump. They maintained their slight conservative lean over time. In 2008, however, 18-29 year olds, the children of these folks, went 66-32 for Obama. They are going to soon make up the largest share of voters. They care about social issues and their children are going to be socialized accordingly. Their parents did instill in them some conservative values. Why not drive some reform in the Republican Party where you try to bring in some new supporters? Do not be the Tea Party but reshape the platform to talk about free markets, fiscal responsibility, being a strong global power, balancing budgets, etc. Do not get caught up on social issues. Condemn racism & sexism but maintain a position like 1 person doing X does not represent the 99% that are not racist or sexist. Run reasonable candidates who make strong economic arguments who say Democrats have moved too far left -- we do not need socialism we need responsible spending & balanced budgets & open markets. Why push so hard on abortion? That issue does not drive dollars and cents but it takes voters away.
So my proposal is to run a slate of Brand New Republicans who will not get sucked into hot button debates. They will bring back economic sensibility and run on issues. That will expand the pool of voters and make them competitive at the national level. I know Trump won and he might win reelection, but then what? How are you adding up to 270 when Obama voters are the majority and their kids are voting too?
