This tougher stance on Turkey is interesting (and crazy). They are one of those “allies” that we keep close to for strategic reasons. I will never be against a tough stance on dictators, but that could be done without reducing our influence. Never mind that Trump adores Putin and wants to show he is tough on Putin’s enemies. Kicking an ally when they are already down is only going to create more opportunities for others (namely Russia) to gain control of the situation. Turkey was a big foothold in the region for us, and a perfect example of NATO’s importance. But we lose that now, and gain nothing in return except appearing to be tough for trumpers.
