I agree that it seems absurd, though a better word would be surreal. It doesn’t, however, seemed “trumped up”. Did you read the details in the recent Muller indictment of those 12 Russians? There is no doubt that the Russians poured A TON of resources into trying to influence the election in 2016–beyond what they had done in prior elections.
There is almost certainly something significant that happened between the Trump Campaign and Russia. It also seems likely based on how weak and submissive Trump appeared in Putin’s presence (vs. how he seemed at NATO and the G7 with allies) that Russia has dirt on Trump or someone in his family.
I do think it is possible that Trump himself had no knowledge of illegal contact/interactions/help from the Russians during the campaign but people who he hired (and possibly some who are related to him) almost certainly did. At best, Trump is incompetent and has very bad judgment In regards to who he hired for his campaign. At worst, he is a traitor who knowingly accepted help from a foreign power that is hostile to many of the ideals on which this country is found. Neither is good but only the latter would be impeachable.
Agree. Too much smoke for there not to be a fire. It is very true—as many right leaning pundits point out—that Russia has consistently meddled in elections for a long time but 2016 was different in terms of scale and breadth. What is coming out now about links between Cambridge Analytica, Russia, the Trump campaign and the Brexit movement is also deeply concerning for all Americans (or it should be) and Democracy in general.
I also think Trump likely didn’t have direct knowledge of his campaigns ties to Russia (or at least it’ll be very hard to prove that he did) but the fact that so many people he hired likely did know is not good.
My guess is most Republicans agree with the above but it is very telling that the only congressional republicans willing to really call out Russia and Trump’s apparent subservient behavior toward Putin in public are those republicans that are leaving office. Most of the rest of them are too weak and pathetic to call him out because his poll numbers are so high among GOP voters.
Classic case of party / career self interest over country. Sad!
