Whoa!!! The USSC just ruled for Janus in Janus vs. AFSCME. Unions can no longer coerce nonmembers to fund speech they disagree with!
“We conclude that this arrangement violates the free speech rights of nonmembers by compelling them to subsidize private speech on matters of substantial public concern.”
This is an ENORMOUS ruling and will weaken the political clout of unions because they will no longer be able to FORCE people to pay union dues. This is a yuge victory for freedom of speech and freedom of association. For 40 years unions could force people to pay dues even if they did not join the union, and those dues were could be used to fund political movements people didn't agree with. It was one of the great injustices in this country and was a direct violation of the 1st amendment. The era of fascist union thugs just ended.
The consequences of this are profound, and they are good. Big day for the US.
It's almost too much winning! HooRah!!!
What was the dissenting opinion?
This Janus ruling will make it impossible for Democrats to forcibly collect donations from Republicans via union dues, and they didn't use weasel words either. The fact that this hideous injustice has been going on for decades is a stain on this country's history. The fact that 4 Lib justices voted to keep this fascist policy in place is a stain on Liberals.
Democrats "fundraising" is going to take a big hit because of this. A lot of their cash gets laundered though unions. This ruling weakens the Democrat Party.
Bigly day for free people in the US. Badly day for Liberal fascism and the Democrat Party. This issue has p!ssed me off for decades and now the injustice has finally ended! Far and away the most important ruling from the USSC in this session.
I am SO pumped! YES!!!
You don't understand how horrible this decision is for worker's rights.

Most shocking is that Trump's SCOTUS approved travel ban includes a ban on North Koreans. LOL.

Fool. You have no clue what a PRIMARY election is. Crowley lost that to a Latina activist who is very liberal. A republican candidate has to run against her. It does not look good for your guy beating this liberal woman.

I am calling for a Nobel Peace Prize for Trump right now. Maybe two or three. Anything less would be a travesty (or fake news)!
Yep. A company that only makes products that are steel. Who saw that coming? Certainly Heir Trump. More of these type of failures to come.

it's an interesting question how anti-trumpers feel about trumpers getting sh8tcanned because of Trump policies.
I mean, I feel bad about the human devastation of lost jobs, but on the other hand, f'em. Trump said he would do this, they voted for him overwhelmingly, and this is what they get.
Same with farmers. I find it hard to have too much sympathy for red state farmers who are losing fortunes because of trump policies. This is what they voted for - it was no secret.
We know the media is 90% liberal because of political contributions, but check this out: a new poll finds that 92% of Republicans believe the media reports fake news, 79% of Independents agree - the out of touch Dems are the only ones being fooled, just 53%. Who's drinking the koolaid?

Workers still have the right to unionized and bargain collectively, they just can't force people who don't want to join them to give them money. Imagine that conservative groups all over the country had the ability to force Liberals to pay dues to fund their political activism. What if the USSSC ruled that everyone in the country benefited from the efforts of Tea Party activists and that the Tea Party could forcibly collect dues from everyone in the country? Would you let that stand?
Well, that's the kind of thing that was going on. The old ruling was that if a worker benefited from union negotiations, then they could be forced to pay dues to cover their "fair share" of the benefits they received. It sounds fair but of course union dues go to support Liberal causes across the country, and many people who were forced to pay dues disagreed with those issues.
This is profound. I haven't had time yet to roll it all into my world view, but the liberal lock on education might get broken because of this. It's huge.

Trump's travel ban on North Koreans is going to cost Dear Leader billions. The propaganda film he showed at the dog-and-pony-show summit, with Trump resorts on the beaches of NK, was a waste of taxpayer money.

You are an idiot. Do you think union staff work for free? Do "republican" workers want the benefits of a union without paying for those benefits? You really are an idiot.
Democrat donations practically dry up without forced union dues, because as we found out in Wisconsin when Walker put an end to forced union dues most people decide not to pay.
Oh happy days!
Good for you. Seems you should know about having to ask the same or similar question several times to try to get an answer then. I was also a journalist for a long time and have been in many press rooms.

Do you think the CATO Institute , Heritage Foundation, and NRA staff work for free? Democrats benefit from their efforts. Should they be forced to pay dues to those activist organizations?
But please! Heap the insults on me today! Pour it on guys. Vent your anger if you have to ... as long as I don't have to fund it.
Of course the union bosses are already threatening to "take it to the streets", which means they will get violent as they always do. I don't think it will work this time because the unions have burned all the good will they used to have. Their day is done.
