In Canada, the best running paths are the escarpment rail trail system in Hamilton, which rivals anything in North America. Hamilton is blessed to be right on the Niagara Escarpment, which basically bisects the city into an upper and lower section. All the old rail lines have been changed to dedicated running/biking paths, most of them dirt/gravel. Some are paved. The best part about them is elevation: an example is one I use a lot that travels about 6.2km up a steady 3% grade all the way, non-stop. Beautiful scenery, deer all over the place. Another one is 32km long, fine gravel, with every km marked with a numbered post.
