If I run every day for a few consecutive days, let's say 2 or 3 days, I start developing shin splints. If I take a day off, then it starts to subside again, and I can run again. Sure enough, if I keep running daily, shin splints will come back. I usually run between 5 and 8 miles daily, with a long run around 10-13 miles. Currently though, I have to at least take 2 or 3 days off per week, otherwise I will get shin splints, even if I run all of them easy.
What should I do to get over it? I'm going to start using the elliptical on my off days as cross-training, and incorporate strength training workouts with kettlebells. However in the long run, I'd like to have daily runs. I also try to keep my strides around 160-170 steps per minute, but it doesn't seem to help too much. I am also a bit old (32 yo) and slightly fat being 5"9' and 165lbs, so I'm trying to lose some weight, hoping this will lessen the pressure on the shins.
Thanks for your help on this,
