I have 2 of my children running high school track and XC. We recently had a coaching change and the former sprint coach is now coaching distance. He feels that our distance runners do not have good kicks, and his preseason training looks like this:
Monday - 3 mile warmup - run bleachers for 25 mins - Core
Tuesday - 3 mile warmup - 12 X 150 - Core
Wednesday - 30 mins Farlek - 1 min on, 30 seconds off - Core
Thursday - 3 mile warmup - 8 X 200 - jog 200 in between - Core
Total miles for the week = 16-18.
Official workouts don't start for a few weeks, but I'm really puzzled by this approach. From talking to my kids, he said he doesn't believe in establishing a base. He feels long slow runs just teach you to run slow.
I ran XC and Track in high school and college many moons ago. I feel like I'm in bizarro world. I don't want my kids performances to suffer due to the offbeat ideas he has. Any suggestions as how to approach a coach who seems to be bucking convention?
