Edwrards, the 2016 NCAA mile champ, ran the time in Nebraska. It eclipses the previous collegiate best of 2:40.82 that Villanova's Angel Piccirillo ran last year.

Seems like a very soft record.
When I was running 158 I could run 229 for 1k.

Then you were better at the 1k than 800. A 2:30 is a 1:55.
Equals 2:03.8/4:15.5. Not a bad early season mark, but a soft record.
What are the odds Murphy or Watson goes under this in a couple of hours?
That would be funny indeed. The first time a HS record was better than the collegiate?

I'd propose Ryun's 3:55.3 in 1965 was better than the collegiate record at that time? Cannot find historical college record data

Ryun was not only faster than the collegiate record, his 3:55.3 was the American record.
The NCAA record would not be faster than the HS record until....Jim Ryun.

Soft indeed!
I don’t think Suzy Hamilton ever ran a serious indoor season while in college and I don’t recall Jenny Simpson ever running the 1000m. I would be very surprised if either one of these athletes couldn’t run a sub-2:40 1000m. The athlete who held the record, Angel Piccirillo; I don’t recall her running better than a 2:05 800m. This is not meant to take anything away from Kaela because a lot of great NCAA athletes have run the 1000m and she ran better than all of them.
Might be a soft record but she did run it as her Indoor rust buster and completely by herself...

Anyone who can run 2:29 can go faster than 1:58, whether you did or not is irrelevant.
That said 2:40 is a soft record. Cain ran 2:35.80 at age 18.
I would say the record is still soft, probably the softest on the books. I would not be surprised if a high schooler gets close to the record this year.
The men's record of 2:18 isn't exactly bulletproof either.

She is kind of cute just saying :)
