Congrats to the old-tymer.
Hi Marky.
Jesus that looked painful. Who the f*ck let him even attempt a muscle up on rings? With stuff like that, you need to be able to hit several reps on a pull up bar before you even think about attempting rings. Dude probably just strained every ligament anywhere near his shoulders....
Anywho.....I have been thinking lately about 50+ year old guys I see around that are A) super ripped and B) super strong. It always makes me wonder if this is natural, or the result of some testosterone medication. I hope it's natural, because that gives me a lot of hope as to what kind of fitness I can achieve as I get older.
Most people in their 20s cant do one. The old chap is tough.

The rule of thumb I heard on some YouTube video is that you probably need to be capable of about 20 pull ups at once to do a muscle up. I'm unsure if that is a good guide but it sounds reasonable.
Crossfit is a scam designed by orthopedic surgeons for job security.
I'll do my sets of 25-30 real pullups (not xfit kipping-fish ups) and keep my healthy shoulders thank you.

I agree. I'm 58 and am in the gym 5x per week. I'm considered chunky for a runner but I can out work a lot of the young guys. But a muscle up is out of the realm of possibility for me. A trainer at the gym tried it...was out a couple weeks afterward due to a hernia.
That would destroy my rotator cuff.
Props to the dude.
Muscle ups are all technique and not strength.
He has the basic technique and then gutted out the finish.
Well done.

You are kidding right? If they were all technique and not strength anyone could accomplish one.
That's like saying a 200 pound clean-and-jerk or knocking out 20 strict pull ups, palms facing outward, is all technique and not strength...try it..

That's bullshit. For most people strength comes easier than technique.
But hey, im proud of you man, for your first muscle up. Good job, have a lollypop, chief.
Look, that's impressive, but does it really count as a rep when one kicks their legs like that?
It would be easier for him if he wasn't so chunky

Clean and jerk benefits immensely from technique. Strict pull ups benefit not at all from technique. So the c&j was a bad analogy for your point.
At any rate, I can do about 6 muscle ups on the rings. I tried after weekly pole vault practice two weeks in a row but couldn't do one. Once I learned the technique on the third week, I immediately could do 3 or 4. Further practice allowed me to do more in the future.
The point is that you are wrong. Despite it being called a "muscle up," technique is very important.
I can do about 15 or 16 pull ups. So for the poster who said 20 pull ups are required to do one muscle up, it isn't true (in my case).
So you can't be weak and be able to do them, but you don't have to be ridiculously strong.
I find bar muscle ups go be a little harder than rings.

He has the most important attribute: short arms.
If you can do 10 pull-ups and 10 dips you have the requisite strength for a muscle up. After that it's all technique and all about creating momentum.
I don't do them because they look stupid, but I can do 20 strict pull-ups and 20 deep strict dips.
Alan
So you are saying you can't do a muscle up? Show me video proof.
