I enjoy being proud of my ancestors. A couple of thousand years ago, they were designing and building structures that are still marveled today.
On a serious note, why doesn't the incredibly large continent of Africa contain engineering marvels? Egypt has a fantastic history, but most of the rest of the continent is void of engineering masterpieces. What about the "African kingdoms"?

They were missing a critical element. Writing. The Bantu tribes of sub Saharan Africa never reached the level of societal advancement to achieve the organization required to build such structures. If you include the African Mediterranean coast, you get tons of advanced building but that is largely due to the Phoenician and Greek influence.
