Lagat went to Washington State.
We know who else went there, 2 world record holders in the 10K.
Alan Webb, George Mason Univ.

Anyways, heres an athlete for the old timers.. Tom Fleming of William Paterson.
4 time conference champ, won the 1973 and 75 NYC marathons. PR was 2:12. Ran 28:55 10k. Came in 5th at olympic trials. In college ran with the d1 guys at NCAAs and I think placed top 30...Pretty damn good for a d3 athlete in the 70s
Can read up all about him here,

Willy P doesn't even have a track program anymore.

Just one,
Bernie Madoff, he was pretty quick and slippery.
Also need to mention Pat Porter at Adams State, another great Joe Vigil coached runner.
Juha Vataiinen attended Adams State and was as accomplished as Porter. He was European champion at the 5,000 and 10,000 in 1971. He ran the last lap of that 10,000 in 53.8 seconds to finish at 27:52.8. His personal best at 5,000 was 13:28.4. Porter's bests were 13:33.91 and 27:46.8.

Dave Wottle / Bowling Green
Sid Sink was Wottle's teammate at Bowling Green. He was twice NCAA steeplechase champion and once NCAA three miles champion indoors. He held the American record for the steeplechase and was ranked number one in the U.S. in 1971 by Track and Field News.
T. Fleming had great range, a 4:01 mile and he was second at Boston Marathon twice, the poor bah-stud.
I think his college still has cross and track.
Randy Thomas U Mass
Dan Henderson
Wheaton College
Martin McGrady, Central State University
Tommy Turner, Murray State
Both were good at the 600 yards indoors.

Fleming's statement that is most relevant to this thread is: "What I also like about the sport of running is that you don’t have to go to a big time school to be a big time runner."
If we are talking about distances only, what about University of Tennessee? I can think of only Tony Cosey (and he isn't even that notable). Of course, I don't pay close attention to the college scene

Jose 'Tony' Parilla among many prominent runners.
In addition to Alan Webb, Abdi Bile - world champ in the 1500 - is a George Mason alumnus.
As for "one prominent runner" from Yale.....
Kate Grace is a member of an exclusive club - "Yale T&F Alumni Named Kate Who Made the Olympic Final" ... I think it's just she and Kate O'Neill (10,000m, 2004).
That club is so exclusive that even a Yale T&F alum who won two Olympic medals can't get in because his name is "Frank" instead of "Kate".
Think there is still only one member of the "Prominent Yale T&F Alumni Named Weldon" Club though...
Steve Scott: 3:47.69 mile. University of California, Irvine.
