Amazingly my buddy says this is nowhere near a record appearance fee for a marathon.
Anyway, the Chinese have been going full force in sports... read about the Ronaldo and Drogba offers.

It's amazing a race would pay any ap prance fees at all. Put that cash in for first place prize and you will get a great elite crowd.
I don't think there's name awareness in running as much as there once was. There's tons of money to be made in running but sad to say but there's no market for the sport's top athletes.
Seems reasonable. Can't have a race without runners, can't have a fast race without fast runners. They don't need name awareness as much as they need a 2:05.
