Out of sheer curiosity (although I have driven there before for work and general commuting). The worst stretch of road was on Madison St. Between Pulaski and Laramie (about 2 miles). This area is probably the most violent area of the city and one of the worst ghettoes in the US. Talking about 50+ murders on this strip just in this year alone.
Main takeaway: the police presence was absolutely ridiculous. I saw 2 very large Mobile huge command unit vans (one just west of Pulaski, one near Cicero Ave). These vans were located in vacant lots that are now serving as staging areas for police. Each lot had about 5-6 parked squad cars. I also saw a staggering amount of cops driving around. All kinds, too - chicago police, unmarked cars, sherriff, state police cars. I this 2 mile strip I probably saw 20+ police cars in under 5 minutes. This doesn't include the squad cars or vans parked in the staging areas. It truly felt as if the National Guard was patrolling the area.
Rahm and company have really turned up the heat. We'll see if this strategy works. I wonder if a new "hot spot" will pop up now that this one is on lockdown.
