The guy's range was unbelievable. He could do pretty much anything - dance, sing, act, be funny, be sad, etc. Just an amazing performer. When you look at his filmography, he has to rank up there with the select very few of all-time actors.

Yes. Yes I would.
No
My parents went to a concert of his. I liked his songs so much I decided it's time to come to this world the next day, three weeks before the calculated day of birth.
He's not even one of the 3 best, one eyed actors of all time.
Best one-eyed actors of all-time - Sammy Davis, jr, Peter Falk and ....?
Great all-around entertainer, but I wouldn't classify him as an actor per se.
was he an actor at all? wrote:

Safely alert - Never point a gun at anyone even if the gun is "unloaded." From that other thread, a gun can still have a cartridge in the chamber even if you remove the magazine. Remember what happened to Brandon Lee - though they thought that was a gun with blanks.
My top ten black actors of all time
1) Denzel Washington
2) Cicely Tyson
3) Don Cheadle
4) Welsey snipes
5) Sammy Davis, Jr
6) Morgan Freeman
7) Sidney Poiter
8) Ice Cube
9) Forrest Whitaker
10) Eddie Murphy
Among rap dudes, Mos Def is a far better actor than Ice Cube

And back in the 80's, TV actor Jon-Erik Hexum between scenes playfully pointed a blank .44 Magnum to his head, pulled the trigger and died on set.
By the way the actor holding the gun standing behind Sammy Davis Jr in the YouTube pic was a great character actor, Henry Silva. Silva always played the bad guy. He is still alive but retired from acting.

Great point about Hexum. I think he maybe played football for Michigan State - but not sure. Everyone in that clip was a solid character actor. You have Moe Greene from The Godfather. The guy standing next to him was a good one but name escapes me. And of course Henry Silva. He was a good actor and appeared in some Chuck Norris movies I think.
Sammy D was THE greatest actor.
Discriminated against by his era.
Brando and Sammy were tight for awhile. And Sammy come in and visited Brando at Godfather screen tests one day, for kicks and to humor Brando, Coppola let Sammy read the parts opposite whoever was being screened. Brando told Coppola: Sammy should be Michael, he is the best. Coppola said no he should be the Godfather and for a while Brando wanted Sammy to be the godfather and for Brando to play Luca Brasi. Coppola explained he could not get funding for a black godfather. James Caan was in favor of it as well. Ultimately Sammy lost interest and they had him screen for the part of Fredo as the literal black sheep.
But Sammy said me did not really want to be the coward at that point in his career and turned it down.
What could have been. Probably was Sammys best and only chance at an Oscar
Henry Silva is an all-time great character actor. Check out his flicks:

Henry Silva was great in Sharky's Machine. I recommend that everyone see it.
What about Bill Robinson? Mr. Bojangles from the Shirley Temple movies in the 1930s. Un officially held the backwards 100yd dash record. Approx 13.5 I beleive.

When you first movie is in 1950 and your last is 51 years later, often making 6 movies in one year, you have had an outstanding career.
I think he really should have won for Cannonball Run, or Cannonball Run II, or Cannonball Run III, or ..... Cannonball Run VIII...
Actually the line about Freso banging 2 cocktail waitresses at a time was originally put in for Sammy and to Jazz the part up for him.
I always thought Sammy would have made Fredo more loveable and the betrayal more poignant.
John Cazale who played Fredo was awesome but his version was more pathetic and Sammys would have been more fun loving tragic. Cazale grew his mustache to match Sammy's on a dare from Brando to irritate Pacino.
