On her instagram, she said she did a 4 mile tempo at 5:01, 5:03, 5:04, 4:56... HOW? That would make her 5k around 14:30. Is she in that good of shape?

Sucks that she's so much better than you, huh?
Daniels' formula is quite overly simplified. The world of running is not a one size fits all. Even with the best data, the standard error of the estimate for LT and other 'fixed blood lactate parameters' is actually surprisingly large.
They might be downhill.
The other aspect is they clearly are NOT tempo runs. These are race efforts for Martinez.
How do we know? Well, she has tried the 5k on multiple occasions and has run around 15:30ish, which is the times of these tempos.
Runs like this are the reason why her relative endurance is weak. She's straining, not training.
Does Vigil still write the workouts, because that's the way he writes them.
And this exact discussion has been posted here before.
Continuous tempo or 4 x 1 mile tempo with a short recovery?
She literally does this every off season and everyone gets in a tizz. Whether they admit it or not these are basically flat out efforts for her at 5k pace and I don't really understand why they are doing these so far out from USA's and potentially World's.

it's true - she does these amazing tempos and then is exhausted by championship meet time. It's crazy.
Her Instagram shows an "aerobic Tempo" at 5:49 pace in October and then she labels her last two tempos, the 5 min pace ones, as "anaerobic tempos"...I'm assuming the 5:49 was tempo pace for her in October. The anaerobic tempos probably mean run as fast as you can even paced without tieing up...not a traditional tempo...

so, she's doing a 4mi tempo at 5k pace?

It's absurd and impossible. And yet it is kind of true- I see her track 5k pr listed as 15:35 on usatf.org, and I think she runs these 4 mile runs on the road at like 5:01/mile. So my guess is that she could go faster than 15:35 if she ran it in track season when in top shape, and also that the 4 mile practice runs are much harder effort than the traditional tempo runs that are supposed to be "comfortably hard".
I like her and don't have the qualifications to disagree with her training. Love her attitude and work ethic and support of youth. Go Brenda!
I commend her efforts and speed, but I just can't wrap my head around how she does 4 miles at 5k pace...

yeah exhausted by championship meet time, she'll never medal in a major championsh - oh wait
I think a lot of people here forget the difference between a "pace run" and a true "tempo" effort. Running 5:01 for 4mi is a PACE effort. The 5:49 is a true TEMPO. Vigil'a system has always incorporated running at a high end pace for an extended distance, so you can handle that velocity. The faster pace stuff is what a lot of coaches define as a test run (10k pace for 4 miles). It's not likely that this is her 10k pace, but if she can handle the velocity, there's a reason she's doing it. Just my 2¢.
yeah that joe vigil is just some upstart flash in the pan.. no idea what he's doing.

It would be great to know what BM actually did/how she did it - for that "4 mile tempo"
Having been to numerous Vigil seminars - he is a wealth of knowledge but often interchanges terms and maybe even his athletes use different terms interchangeably.
I recall a clinic where he was bragging of Deena running a "10 mile tempo run" where the mile pace was faster than her then 10k AR, and it was done at altitude! Had this been 10x1600 on a track w/3:00 rest I might have believed it, but I struggled to believe much of what he was selling...sorry!
I would love to follow him around and watch a few weeks of his training and observe what actually was occurring...still a big fan, but feel much is not portrayed accurately.
I know one person that believes her, Gerry Lindgren (the man that ran 16:03 for 4 miles once)!
Running 5:01 for 4 miles isn't a pace effort with a 15:3x 5k PR.

She isn't using the word "tempo" in the usual sense, which is 10-mile to HM pace.
Her coach uses the phrases "aerobic tempo" (traditional tempo^) and "anaerobic tempo" (5k-10k pace).
