I had a similar experience 20 years or so ago in Rochester, NY. Went out about 5 am in light sprinkling rain, near freezing temps, and strong winds. Ran two 5-mile loops of suburban streets feeling like a hero for being out there, thinking the whole time about how good that hot shower was going to feel when I got back. Arrived at my front porch, reached down to unzip the pocket of my jacket, and found the pocket unzipped and my key gone.

My first instinct was to lie down on the porch and cry, but quickly realized that would not be helpful. I lived alone, in a condo--no leasing office. But I did have a spare key in my desk at work, only 4.5 miles away. I started running as the rain turned to sleet, blown totally horizontal by the wind. I was nearly horizontal myself at times, but I just bore down and reminded myself that I was a marathoner and a 14.5 mile run should be nothing. Arrived at work and got a friendly janitor to let me into my office, where I retrieved my key and donned the sweatshirt I kept stashed there. I stood there shivering and thought about venturing back out into the sleet, which was now snow, for another 4.5 miles. Are you kidding? I picked up the phone and called a taxi.

This is why I now live in California, where the coldest it gets is about 20 degrees, and only when it's clear and calm...

This morning I was running on a trail when I was buried by an avalanche. I made a air pocket with my arms and jacket until they dug me out. When I got back to my car I discovered my key had fallen out. I didn't want to take a uber and pay $90 for a new key, so I ran back to where the avalanche was and started digging. I dug so far down that I reached bare earth, but still no key. That's when I realized I had dug too deep and couldn't get out. Grateful to live in on a street where I don't lock my doors. Kids at school, my wife and I are at work all day. Front and back doors remain unlocked.

At races, I put the fob behind the front tire. Don't like to carry anything.

This one time I was out on a hobby jog and was completely buried by an avalanche. Fortunately for me I had a lighter in my fuel belt, so using my natural ability to produce a generous amount of gas, I simply created natures blow torch and tunneled my way out.

Daughter and I went and ran a late fall half marathon a few years ago. Parked the car and tucked the key in my key holder pouch in my shorts. Ran the half and met up with daughter. She beat me by more than a few minutes. Walked back to car and key is missing. We backtracked the course for a bit searching for the key. Two sets of eyes, no luck. Hour and a half later we gave up and sat down to figure out our next move. Felt something brush up against my balls. Key was in my nutsack. Daughter was pissed

I assume you're implying you live in a nice neighborhood. Do you have any idea which neighborhoods thieves target? You're either lying or really stupid. A former neighbor of mine came home with her family to find a burglar sitting in the house with a gun. Tied them all up and made them take him to the bank and withdraw some amount. Good luck with your unlocked doors and kids, how f'ing hard is it to turn a lock?

Same thing happened to me running Schenley park in Pittsburgh on a rainy/sleety day. I backtracked twice and on my way back to my car, I saw that somebody had placed it in a plastic bag and tied it from a tree on the trail. God bless that good samaritan who did that!
