Right! This is exactly the kind of tiny step toward a totalitarian society that was mentioned by the Holocaust survivor in that short-lived Hitler thread. This may seem like a small thing, and anyone who stands up and declares "this is totalitarian" will be shouted down as an alarmist, but when you stack up enough of these tiny attacks on freedom of thought and speech, then the totalitarian effect starts to become clear.
This is the second xc team involved in such things. There will surely be many more. I would never have participated in this kind of thing, not via email, not in private conversation, because it is sleazy and disrespectful. But you cannot police speech and sexuality to this level without creating a totalitarian society--and creating a huge backlash, which we have seen in the election.
When in doubt, always err on the side of freedom of thought and freedom of speech. Being temporarily offended is a small thing, but once you've lost freedom of speech it's very hard to get it back.
