I got out of jail 3 weeks ago after doing 4 months there. I was in Tent City in Phoenix - the worst jail in the country. It was my first time in jail - I know jail isn't meant to be easy but I had no idea it would be so bad. You are treated worse than an animal and the guards treat you like a piece of s**t.
Sheriff Joe Apario who ran it got voted out in the election so hopefully it will be shut down. So why is it so bad? You sleep in the desert heat in old Army tents (was 115 in the Summer), only got fed twice a day and most of the food was beyond it's date, he boasted that he spends more on feeding his dogs than on feeding inmates, uniform is black and white stripes with pink underwear and handcuffs - just for humiliation. And there are chain gangs on work details. In 2016! A few days after getting out I saw one of the chain gangs working on the highway and felt real bad for them because I knew what it was like.
I am so glad to be out and am trying to get my life back to normal. I am back home with my family as I lost my job and the place I was renting and my girlfriend because of jail. But when people hear you have been in jail they don't want to give you a chance. I am back training and plan on doing my first marathon next year.
