I have a friend that passed up an awesome job he was passionate about that paid 80k to stay in his 115k 70hr a week banking job he hates.
His only reason was "I want to ensure I meet my retirement savings goals"
His logic is it's better to spend your youth (in his case 30 to 55) grinding it out doing something you hate for more money so you can enjoy your twilight years a little more (ie. retire 5 years earlier and travel first class)
To me this sounds totally absurd. In fact, I've read the happiest people with the most longevity seek and work careers they love so much they don't want to (and in some cases never!) retire. This seems far more logical: do something you love all your life - instead of the typical North American standard of: do something for money for 30 years and then feel obsolete and full of regret retired for 20 (but at least you drive a nice car!)
Am I missing something? Am I crazy?
