Have you ever seen results like this?:

I am an assistant coach in Northern NJ and we had a meet that was ridiculously, extremely close and I wanted to know if any of you have ever seen results quite like this (linked below). At our State Sectional Meet, the top 5 teams and top 10 individuals advance to the State group meet the next week. No wildcards. The two top teams in this particular race (North I Group 3) were Indian Hills (#2 NJ at the time) and Morris Hills (#11 NJ at the time). Because both these teams were so good, I knew the other scores would be higher. The fifth place team generally scores around 150 points and I figured 170 would be the magic number to qualify. Boy was I wrong...
Indian Hills and Morris Hills scored 22 and 52 points respectively which drove up the scores like crazy. But, if you take a look, things get real interesting. There was a tie for 5th place, the final qualifying spot, between Wayne Valley and Old Tappan with 228 points, a huge total. Due to the tie, they look at the 6th man. Wayne Valley's #6 was 90th. Old Tappan's was 91st AND they recorded the same exact time! I don't think I have ever seen such a razor thin margin of qualification at an XC meet. However, the fun is just beginning.
The 7th place team, two slots away from qualification, was a scant 2 points out of 5th with 230 points. Warren Hills finished in 8th with 231 points, just 3 points from qualifying. Warren Hills, to make matters worse for them, was the third team to put two runners across the line and still wound up 8th despite having the FIFTH FASTEST team time in the race. The team I coach, had little shot of qualifying coming into this race. We came in 12th with 253 points, just 25 points out of 5th! Imagine, 8 teams were within 25 points of one another and a shot to qualify for the next meet.
To me, these results see and feel almost mathematically impossible but it sure made for a hell of a meet.
