Who has the World's Heaviest Sub-3 marathon?
All the runners I know who have done it are 150 lbs or less...
There's gotta be some decently heavy dudes at Boston who dipped below 3...

I did 2:42 at 6'0", 158. I'm not sure what my heaviest weight for sub 3 has been, but probably over 170 when I wasn't very skinny and was also lifting weights. Would wager that numerous people north of 200 have done it, especially for taller guys. Sub 3 isn't very fast if you're an able bodied, young-ish male that has done a handful of long runs in training. Honestly, I'd be very surprised if I learned that there was never a tall (6'6"+) 250+ guy that broke 3.
In this particular race, a 190 pound 46 year old ran 2:41. That would indicate that a taller and much heavier 25 year old ought to be able to break 3. Unfortunately, doesn't look like any majors keep track of these categories.
James Cracknell (6'4") was reportedly 216 pounds when he ran this 3:00:10. He later ran 2:50, but I don't know the weight then.
150 pounds is waaaaaaaay overrated for anyone slower than 2:30.
If your goal is to run just under 3 and you're spending a ton of energy getting to or maintaining 150 pounds, you're looking at training very wrong.

Huh? It does not take any effort for many people to maintain 150 lbs.
I know a guy who ran 225 at over 180 and he was only 5"9
Former Defensive End. Played at 275lbs (6'4"). Now down to 215ish. Best is 3:23 mid in mid 30s off of 65-75mpw.
I understand the naive nature of comments such as "any healthy blah blah blah should be able to go sub 3 rather easily", but those posters may kindly go play in traffic.
Wasn't there some huge bodybuilder guy discussed on these boards ages ago who ran a marathon bare chested in about 2hr 30 min or something like that?
I ran 2:45 at 5'-11" and 185 lbs.
I have run 2:40:50 @ 192lbs. I was a laborer with a construction company and ran 100+ miles per week. Basically aerobic all day long.
Trust me, I would have liked to be a lot lighter but at the time with what I was doing that was not going to happen.
broke 3 hours at approx 180.
Seems like the more relevant inquiry would concern body fat.

I am 6'2" and at my lightest, ran at 185lbs.
At my heaviest, 210lbs.
I have 17 sub 3 hour marathons.
Anyone mentioning guys under 200 lbs are wasting their time. Under 200 pounds for someone over, hell 5'8" or so, is still relatively skinny. I know a guy who was around 225 and ran in the 2:30s. He is 6'3" and athletic. So if we're going by just weight, it is kind of pointless... A guy who is 165 but has a high body fat percentage is going to have a rougher time breaking 3 than a guy who is 205 but fit and jacked.
I am 6'2" and 185. I ran 2:52 debut. Was on pace for a 2:42 until mile 21 at which point a giant monkey jumped out of the bushes, jumped on my back, and forced me to carry him the last 5 miles. Never ran another 'thon again.

I HATE those marathon monkeys. RDs need to do something about them. They get me all the time, too.
