Side note: I'm not in the wedding or anything and the groom is fully bearded (at least at the pre wedding party last night).

Dude are you a grown man or not? Do whatever the f you want and MAKE it acceptable.
If you aren't in the wedding party it's pretty much irrelevant what your facial hair looks or sounds like.

If you are not in the wedding party it doesn't matter. Just make sure it looks presentable.
I once had a beard and I was the best man. I told the bride and groom that I wasn't attached to it and would probably shave it within a month but they said keep it because they liked it.
