I was switching subway lines in Manhattan yesterday evening when a polite boy, roughly ten years old, introduced himself to me, shook my hand, and asked me if I would donate money to his basketball team. (Had he known my financial circumstances, he might have given me some money.)
Is this a good thing to teach kids? Would it be better to encourage kids to have a fundraiser of a different sort, one that provides a service in exchange for money (and people might be generous with a tip) such as a car wash, a bake sale, a tag sale, etc.?
