Have you ever shown up to one, without having experience playing hoops? How did it go?

I'm confused about why you're asking this. Have you ever shown up at a pole vault competition and competed in it, without having experience?
The first time I played, I had no experience. I'll bet that's true for everyone who's ever played.
This is also called a "Pick up game". Moran.
I vault poles all the time.
OP, in case you are serious...
My brother-in-law is the kind of guy who likes to play games for exercise, so he does this kind of thing regularly. He goes to rec centers and YMCAs and looks for games (soccer, basketball, etc). He competes hard and is a very good athlete.
I have gone with him on occasion and while I played soccer through HS, I never played organized basketball. I have jumped in three different games with my brother-in-law, and every time it has been very tough. Basketball is a lot harder than you think, especially if you want to play well. I am a pretty decent athlete, so I want to do well and contribute to the team. The added pressure of just showing up and not knowing the people also gives you something to prove. It is fun and exciting, but it is too much work for me to do on a daily basis. I prefer exercise to be running: easy, simple, effective and I can do it on my own.
You'd be surprised how many terrible athletes show up to pick-up games. So never be afraid to join in.
Watch "White Men Can't Jump" 'bout sums it up for me.
What In a Pickle said.
I play pick up games at my gym once in a while and there are people of all levels playing. My advice would be to jump in but don't try to do too much and expose that you don't know what you are doing. I happen to be kind of tall and fairly strong for a runner so I end up doing my best at defense, rebounding and passing. Shooting seems to be a skill that takes practice and athleticism. All the glory goes to the scorers, but it's still fun.
Your joints will take abuse in ways running won't prepare you for, though.
Yeah. This is me.
Yes I have! It went so well ESPN did a 30 for 30 on me! Unless you are Little Mary Decker and reading this thread you don't have a 30 for 30. Get a life kids.
I don't think anyone truly shows up at a random game. This would imply that you were equally likely to show up at any game anywhere on the planet, but ended up at the game you did entirely by chance.
No, not any games that would be considered random.
once i was shooting the ball with my gf and two black guys game and challenged us to a game of 2v2 lol. It was kind of awkward but we accepted and ended up beating them. They were getting all mad at each other during the game it was pretty random. My gf and I are terrible at basketball too
