Have been running for a couple years, male sophmore now. Last fall (freshman) I ran a 5:48 time trial, by myself, and not on a track. Up to that point, I'd been running less than 10-15 miles a week except for a 6 week period were I jumped to a 28 mile avg and then burnt out. Pretty much my only training was running a mile as fast as I could a few times a week and the rare 2-5 mile run (main goal being to lose weight and get into shape). I've never actually ran in a race, and have been running alone mostly.
This year I wanted to time trial myself on a track after 2 12 week bouts of 15-20 and 25-35 mile training but was unable to because of an minor injury. I've never really done much speed work except for hills, but here is one odd session I did about a month back: 4x400m with 30sec rest - {1:19.5, 1:21, 1:20, 1:22.5} avg 1:20.75 - 5:23/mi.
I think I could've run under 5:20 this fall and I'm pretty confident of breaking 5 next spring. Is that a reasonable goal? I want to run well in the 5000m as I am better at distance. What could someone see as a reasonable goal for the 5000 next fall? I've been getting serious about training this year and trying to train smarter and more.
Thanks.
