I have had the privilege of watching Graydon, along with his very talented sister, run lots of workouts over the past year. He is coached by Eliud Njubi, also a friend of mine. There is no mistake either, he is most definitely a freshman.
What is very impressive to see is this young man's very positive attitude, and just real enjoyment for running. He has a great head on his shoulders and I haven't caught a hint of ego from him. His twin sister is also a very talented runner as well with the same great attitude and work ethic. Just very great kids with a really great family as well, who fully support their running passion, and with zero pressure applied to these two.
I won't speak out a lot about their training as Eliud has his own system, but it's really just basic workouts at a range of paces, aimed at peaking over the season. He does a great job of keeping a really fun and focused training group. He smartly preaches keeping their easy runs controlled and not races, and to keep the pace at no faster than 7 minute mile pace; even advising Graydon and others to go slower if they need to on those easy days. (I'm a Tinman coached runner and Graydon and I have even talked about this, how Tinman similarly kept Drew Hunter at around 7 min/mi for his easy paced runs, and didn't rush the process). And of course, Eliud has a progressive plan to gradually build his mileage over the next few years.
Graydon's a great kid with a great future ahead of him IMHO.
