Yes, it makes sense. Most top HS runners come from top school programs. As a coach, even if you have one superstar, it makes more sense to want to bring your whole team to a national championship, rather than one or two runners. NXN offers that opportunity. Pretty quickly, top runners (in weaker programs) will want to have the chance to run against the best (who are now mostly running NXN) and therefore choose to go to NXN.
NXN has been the top race for girls for the last 4 years. I believe that this is the first year that the FL boy winner will not be the national champion.
