Someone should let ESPN know about this. It's in their backyard. How hard would it be for them to send a couple employees with a microphone and a camera?
Galen makes an early move on the hill. A couple of young guys go with him and blow up. True reels him in at mile 4 and out kicks him ftw. Chelimo goes with True but finishes 2nd. Galen 3rd.
True is the superior road racer of the distance.

No way 4:12 is worth any of those times, those are probably similar to about 4:05

There is a fairly good chance this is how it will turn out. Anyone know what True's been up to? He stopped using Strava a little over a month ago and before that he as mostly biking.

I run it every year so I've never actually watched, but I'm told by friends that the coverage is notoriously bad. It's like they dig out the old cameras for this race, it's not even HD and the commentators are the local news anchors who drew the short stick to work Thanksgiving morning, so don't expect great commentary...perhaps Lori Riley will be live tweeting from the media truck out front, but she might run also, not sure. @lrileysports on the Twitter
Looks like you're right, per the News section of the MRR website:
The annual Turkey Day road race will also be televised on Fox 61 TV. The station will air race day reports from Manchester on its morning news program between 7-9 a.m. The race will be televised live on Fox 61 TV on Thanksgiving morning from 9-11 a.m. News anchors Erika Arias and Tim Lammers will broadcast the race for Fox 61.
Still, better than nothing. Is there a separate elite start time, or do they go off at 10:00am EST with everyone else?
2nd mile all uphill but downhill stretch between 2 and 3. Race usually plays out either someone has broken away on the hill and wins or a small group breaks away and then comes down to last half mile. First mile usually about 4:30 or faster and 5:00 minutes or so for second mile.
They go off at 10:00 AM EST with everyone else.
Second mile is a genuine mile-long, uphill grind. The downhill past 2 miles is a screamer, ie, makes up most of the elevation gain in about four-tenths. I'm guessing Rupp is a good downhill runner with his midfoot strike and long stride. Great field. TV has previously been abysmal, but here's hoping.
Keep an eye on Aaron Braun, guy is back in really good shape. 63.xx HM recently!
John Gregorek for the $1,000.....1st at 2 mile mark. Then settles in to finish with the Thanksgiving Day hobby joggers.
I've merged all of the Manchester threads into 1.
Did anyone see this article on Rupp/Salazar.
Rupp may be wearing his mask!!
"He should be able to run considerably faster than it. But in cold weather, [sometimes] he has a bad reaction where he has severe breathing problems. We brought him some masks to wear but that cuts down on your breathing.
"Sometimes just trying to run a little too fast puts you over the edge. If it was a warm day and other athletes were pushing, I think he could run underneath that record. So as a result, I'm going to tell him, 'Go out and try to win the race. If it's going well and you're feeling good, go for it at the end. But not from the beginning.' He hasn't dropped out from asthma for a couple years in a race but I don't want it to start [Thursday]."
Competitive level wrote:
It might be a training block, but it's still a race. You being a coach should know that these elite athletes have a competitive edge beyond most which is why they are elite. I doubt that Rupp is coming from Portland, Or to Manchester, Ct just to run a "glorified" tempo. There will be a race!
$4k might not be a lot to Rupp, but there are others who want that money. There will be a race!
Unless of course, you believe Rupp likes to lose.
Nonsense, elites run races out of season all the time that they specifically say they just ran it as a tempo or tune up and didn't push, or if they did push, they are well outside of peak fitness.
Some examples would be
- Usain Bolt's entire season every year up until trials
- Rupp's qualifying half marathon last year, when he stated it was controlled (granted, he won by like 10 minutes)
- Mo losing xc world's last year
My point is that this might be a great race, but "track coach" has a valid point, and you outed yourself as the one who isn't very knowledgeable. It isnt elites desire to compete that makes them elite, there are plenty of mid pack runners who are just as competitive. And to be more than elite, but a champion, you have to know when to push and when to back off.

Will make soup out of top finishers singlets and pie from their shorts.
I wish Ben True was still logging on Strava :(
It would be cool to see what his preparation for this was like after down time for most of September.
Ian is commentating, so it should be OK.
Have to finish in top 10 to get the $1,000 2 mile prime
Update: Ben True needs a haircut. More on this as it develops......
