Cheserek was dethroned today but to say that King Cheserek is a joke of a title is to ignore the fact that while he had lost before (to a D2 or D3 guy, to Jordy Williamsz, to Lalang(? the Kenyan 12:59 guy), once to Jenkins at 3k), and at nationals (in track), he had racked up something like 11 individual titles and multiple team titles already. No one has ever had a better NCAA distance career and that is still the case.

Congratulations to Tiernan. It is a tremendous feat to keep pushing and fighting for the win after years of defeats to someone thought invulnerable when healthy. To beat Cheserek in a season when he has been winning by large margins and in which his coach said he was way ahead of previous years (maybe peaking too early) is a real achievement.

Ches simply got beat by a better athlete "on that day".

Even if you are the best athlete, it takes a lot of good luck to beat 200 athletes in a race 4 times in a row. Especially when there are a couple other athletes who also think they can win.

Tiernan is obviously on a different level compared to last year. He's improved more than Cheserek has.

Splits for Ches in 2013: 14:35/15:06- Kennedy went out too hard and Ches was able to catch him running 30 flat pace.

Splits for Ches in 2014: 15:30/14:50 with 5:40 last 2k

Tiernan in 2016: 15:17/14:05 with 5:29 last 2k

Ches in 2016 15:17/14:31 - 5:54 last 2k

Unbelievable races by Tiernan and Knight. Much stiffer competition for Ches that the 2013 and 2014 Terre Haute races.
