my times are similar to yours when you were a soph. This is a fantastic thread. Looking to do something similar to you.

Season wrapped up tonight. Ran a 10:48 3200 (8 second PR) and a 4:54 1600!(2 seconds off pr, but still 2nd fastest ever) and it was ran after 2 mile. Much more impressive double than 3 weeks ago (4:54 vs 5:12, 10:48 vs 10:56).
Are you a junior this year or senior?

I am currently a junior
Really solid thread. Looking forward to more updates.. have you had anymore races?
Spring track starts friday... first race is end of march.
First race (scrimmage) is in two weeks. Goals for outdoor:
3200m: 10:20
1600m: 4:40
I also want to break our school record in 4x1600...
Right now our top milers are
4:32 (indoor)
4:37 (indoor)
4:52 (indoor)
5:10 (indoor, not actually our 4th guy)
The guy that I said is at 5:10 ran a 10 second pr in the 800 in his last race, going from 2:27 to 2:17.... he is a freshman and doesn’t really have that race mentality yet, but I think outdoor track with dual meets will help him realize that he can run faster. He runs with me on workouts, so I thnk in a race he can stick with me or maybe be ahead of me. He is an incredible talent imo and I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t go sub 4:45 at the least this season.
We have 3 chances at the school record.
4/7
4/13
4/20
With that being said do you guys think this is possible? I’ve been starting to workout and have been encouraging 2/3 other members of this relay to go on 10+ mile long runs on sundays. Over the winter we all ran prs with long runs. I also talked to our coach about running more mileage (in winter and xc we only run like 15-25), and she said she’ll get us up to mid 40s so I think that’ll be beneficial.
So our school record is 18:48 (4:42 average). I know me and the 4th guy will have to drop some serious time, but I think by april and outdoors we will both be around mid 4:40s.
Do you guys think this is plausible. Tell me why and why not. We’re really going for it this year... the 4.37 guy is a senior, and the 4th guy is a freshman but is moving..
Me (4:52) and the 4:32 guy are juniors and will be returning next year.
Reading your thread for a while now.
I’m a sophomore trying to break 5 in the mile. I ran 5:08 last season, because I hurt my knee before the season started. That was a tremendous blow to my running, because I ran a 5:37 in crosscountry with literally no speed training, but indoor my first race I ran a 5:47. Now my outdoor season is starting, and I’m trying to break the 5 minutes barrier.
I also have goals for my junior year, they are listed below(a safer bet is to make these goals for senior year)
-sub 4:40 for the mile
-sub 17 minutes for the 5k
-sub 10 minutes for the 2 miles
So far I dropped my mile time from not able to run a mile to 5 minutes, and also a 5k time from 25 minutes to 18:57.
Wish you good luck and keep at it, your thread really inspired me to trying harder so just remember that I’m trying to get good like you.
I think you guys have a great chance to break the record. Especially, if you guys are able to train at 40 mpw and all are able to stay healthy. After reading this whole thread I think the most important thing is for you is to try your best to not get sick this season. You work hard in training but then you'll get sick and it interrupts what you have been doing. I think you have the talent and work ethic to be running alot faster. So this should be the season where your able to put everything together and run fast. Good luck and have fun with it. You remind me alot of myself my junior year and I went from 4:48 indoors to 4:31 outdoors. So anythings possible for this season as long as your paitent and work hard.
Haven’t updated in a while. The first weekend of practice, we got a little excited and tempoed around 6 miles at 6:30 pace. Next morning I woke up and my hip was killing me. The past 3 weeks i’ve been on and off training, but have only run about 10 miles in total... the past week I only ran 3 miles on wednesday. Went to the doctor on friday and he said I have IT band syndrome, which isn’t really that bad, and can start to train again. Yesterday was our scrimmage so even though I haven’t ran in a while, I said why not and just ran it anyway.
5:05 and a 2:26. The mile I wasn’t that disappointed with since I definitely am not used to the intensity of racing right now, and the 800 was a split of a DMR in which we won by like 30 seconds and I was hardly trying. Im about to go for a long run now... next meet is on tuesday against 2 other teams (tri-meet). Looking to hopefully bounce back under 4:55, that’d be great for confidence. I’ll also run the 3200, not sure what to expect at all since I don’t really have any endurance right now...
Season goals again are still:
3200: 10:20
1600: 4:40
Looks like I’ve got my work cut out for me. On another note, in an attempt to change things from winter to improve more, I’ve started to workout everyday, alternating between upper body and abs. I’ve also been making an effort to get 8 hours of sleep everynughr instead of the ~6.5 I averaged in the winter. I’m also looking to make Sunday long runs that are 10+ miles happen every week. Hopefully these will help me get my goals.
Happy easter!
I read this whole thing and I'm amazed at your dedication to this thread! lol I think I might try doing the same thing just to be able to keep up with my training log and PR progression. Good luck at all your goals! I'm sure you'll reach them if you keep working as hard as you have been. I have pretty lofty goals for myself too and I never even talk about them with others because they'll act as if I'm cRaZy.
On wednesday I ran the 1600m in 5:01, and the 3200m in 12:09, wasn’t really trying.
Not really worried with those times...
Today I ran a 5:10 in a 4x1600 leg which was annoying. Then about an hour later our 4x800 was lining up, but our leadoff was missing, so a teammate I was sitting with said “dude hop in they need a guy”. So I literally took off my sweats and sweatshirt, grabbed a baton. While I was jogging to the line, the gun went off, so i was a little behind, and was also running in my traineds since I literally had like a 10 second notice. Ended up running 2:21 which I was pretty happy with because I haven’t been runnig alot and wasn’t ready/didn’t have spikes....
Then came the DMR.
I anchored in....
5:33 for the 1600...
I was having some weird sharp pains in my left chest, and my team was almost in last place, so I wasn’t really trying.... still a bit concerin because it was prettt slow...
Overall disappointing day, but I’ll bounce back.
Haven’t really ran more than 3 miles since one of the first days of practice. It looks like it a long way to get back into indoor track shape....
I’ve been working out a little, getting more sleep, and trying to eat a little better recently..
Next meet is on monday, gonna try to go sub 5 again in 1600 and under 11:20 in 3200.
The frustration continues, I ran a 5:04 today, and didn't even run the 3200. I think the laps were about 72, 78, 79, 75...
A kid that I beat during indoor ran 4:48 today and 10:30, pretty annoying. It feels like a repeat of last season where I can't convert indoor times to outdoor. Granted, I haven't really had any runs above 3 miles in the past few weeks, but its still annoying that kids that hardly try/don't give a s*it are getting varsity letters and im not even close to the standards (4:50 and 10:40)
Next meet is friday....
Poor outdoor season continues.... 5:11 1600m split in the dmr..... I have a dual meet monday, im thinking of running the 1600, 800, and 3200 just to get a feel for the 800... since its the least endurance-oriented, I feel like I could drop a pr in it...
I don't do as well in outdoor track as xc or indoor running either... it's the HEAT! I've literally passed out twice during the first hot track meet of the year (my 8th and freshman years). Not this year because my mom tells me to "pound water" but I'm pretty sure my intolerance of heat is the problem.
CHAMPIONSHIP Season is beginning.... Tomorrow is County Relays and I'm running the 4x1600, Saturday running the 1200 leg in the DMR. Some notable events this past week:
Sunday LR: 10 miles @7:54 average (last 5 miles were at 7:24 average)... First long run since January..
Monday Tempo: 3 mile tempo part @6:30, first tempo in a while.
Wednesday: 200, 400, 400, 400, 800, 400, 400, 400, 200 (equal recovery, 200m run = 200m recovery jog for example)
200: 31
400: 69
400: 69
400: 69
800: 2:48 (hip was killing me and didn't want to hurt it so I stretched after this)
400: 69
400: 68
400: 67
200: didn't do, hip was really hurting at this point.
Pretty happy with this workout... First full track workout for me this spring, and it wasn't that bad besides the hip. My 400m speed is as good as ever so thats good for me. 800 was trash but not that worried.
Looking to bounce back under 5. This meet is the equivalent of the county relays during indoor in which I broke 5 for the first time of the winter this past winter. Running same position too (3rd leg).
I'll update you all!
AND....
The adversity continues...
5:12 1600m split on 4x1600...
3:43 split for 1200m on DMR.
I've also been having some intense pains on the outside of both legs, it hurts to walk and run. I took today off, and am planning on taking Monday and Tuesday off. Legs need rest and I want to make sure they're pain-free and not stress fractures or something.
Next meet is wednesday... Still chasing indoor shape (2:17, 4:52, 10:48).
been a rough season to say the least....
Two saturdays ago I ran 5:02, and 2:20.
Today I ran 5:02 and 11:37.. frustrating that my 3200 is a slower pace than my 5k was. As for mile, I kept pulling my hamstring so splits were terrible...
70, 83, 82, 67... got the dip at the line though!
pretty sure I have one more race left...
will most likely not be getting my varsity letter, as the standards are 10:40 or 4:50, OR 11 varsity points, and I have 10.5 but dont have any more opportunities to earn them... frustrating as hell.
Please explain this point system? I got my varsity letter by virtue of running varsity at district.
Parent of a HS freshman kid here.
First, it's just beautiful that you're sticking to the running, and blogging about it.
Second, you shouldn't be in this much pain. My kid runs with a well known coaching staff, and they stress stretching and recuperating. They wouldn't permit you to run broken. Is your coach serious about their job? I'm skeptical.
Look forward to reading about your xc season. Best of luck.
