Been there, done that. But NOT on a simple out-and-back course very similar to this one.
I did however have Kip Litton pop up in front of me and steal one finishing place on said out-and-back course. Coincidentally about the same distance from the finish where you got "lost" on this course. So yea, I see how this happens.
