ran 5:17 my 8th grade year of track after one year of relatively consistent running (maybe 12/-15 mpw?), probably could've ran faster if i had properly warmed up, actually ate within a few hours of my races (my prediction would be 5:08 in perfect conditions)
however, like 8th grade xc season last year, i did not do as well as i had hoped i would in my first season (thought i'd be a star, lol). i ran a 12:42 3k on a pretty good day at the end of the season. also went over to track and ran a 6:03 1600 in late december. but, my first race at 1600 in track, in early march, i ran a 5:24 (was fastest kid in my school by this point). i did a fair amount of maturing, but not an outrageous amount. btw, i'm young for my grade and 5'8
now, this xc season, have only run a dismal 19:45 for 5k... but over-summer training was more like 4 runs a week, 5-6 per run, and had two separate week-long stretches w/ absolutely no running (injuries). point being not terribly consistent and maybe overtrained. one important thing: i'm DEFINITELY more suited to shorter distances. i ran a 2:26 less than 10 minutes after my 5:17. on a good day, i feel like 2:19-20 was possible.
so about now, and 2017 track season: i want to run a sub 4:45 1600, maybe a 2:08-11 800.
so, question: you guys think this is possible? i mean the sub 4:45 next spring. even sub 4:50 would be nice. will i make a huge jump in fitness like i did from my last xc to track season?
the reason i'm asking this is b/c all my freshie friends seemed to improve by leaps and bounds.. our fastest freshie ran a 17:20 5k and 5:01 recently after a 5:21 in track, where i beat him (last race of season), while it appears that i have gotten slower, in our annual xc mile time trials i ran a dismal 5:23, then the next one a 5:29.
wanna be around 1:53/4:20/9:20 senior year
