Kenenisa Bekele "I feel sorry for Eliud Kipchoge, I would like him to have medaled". 3/21/2005 12:03AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
Class act from a true Champion and sure to stir up Eliud as he sought out to defeat Kenenisa but only won his opponent's sympathy!

I think this may help the Kenyans too train alittle harder as what great country of distance runners would want another athlete to sympathy with its best athlete's defeat.

back to the subject of the thread

I didn't think Eliud would be able to handle Kenenisa in the long course, his best bet would have been the 4k short course. Eliud is more of a 5000m runner who could run a outstanding 1500m while Kenenisa is more of a 10000m man who can run just as good at 5000m or 1/2Marathon (should he try). The Kenyans best beat would have been to put Eliud in the short course and try to take that title from Kenenisa.

Vipam, I can assure you that there are multiple people who question your infatuation with Kenenisa Bekele. I know because I am one and that other person is someone completely different.

I think you need to stop beginning threads that are always the same.

I can literally open a thread you have started and, before reading, know that your message is "Bekele ran a great race, my, everyone will have their hands full beating him in the 5K at Helsinki."

We get it. Enough.

In a culture such as ours who lavish childern with hallow praises and empty adulation, here is a lesson from a true champion about greatness:

"He declined to name himself the greatest cross-country runner ever: "That's not for me. That's something only other people can determine. If they say so that is up to them, but this is certainly the best result I have achieved."

Boy, call me a Kenny lover or whatever, I will happly live with that!

It shows a class that I wish our professional athletes have. This dude basically has a legitimate right to say he is the best CC runner of all time, yet he declines to even talk about it, Yet some jack second string full back stumbles into the endzone and spends the next 3 minutres telling everyone he is the greatest football player on earth.

And even closer ot home we have a jackass who hasn't won a competitive 100m in years but it doesn't stop him from tatooing GOAT on his arm and taking his shirt off every time he beats a field of college kids and has beens.

While it sure was nice of Bekele to not proclaim himself as the best ever (which he no doubt has a case for), I don't see what the big deal is. It's not like Lance Armstrong goes around proclaiming himself the best ever. I don't ever remember Michael Jordan or Barry Sanders saying in an interview "yea i'm the best, simple as that". And yet nobody is like WOW HOLYCOW they are great people for not doing that!
Sure there are a few exceptions like the last example of Maurice Greene who is so full of himself that he named himself GOAT. Or deion sanders who gave himself the nickname Primetime. Point being most elites/greats do just like bekele did and try to maintain a measure of modesty, don't be blinded b/c a few are full of themselves, there are plenty of others like Bekele (in terms of modesty).
Vipam get your head out of Bekele's crotch, he's a great runner no doubt, but its time to back off the borders of obsession and come back to being a fan like normal people.
