I go to Anaheim a few times a year by the convention center. I usually don't have time to drive somewhere or don't want to waste time I could be running to drive somewhere.
I went on a longish run on the Santa Ana Bike Trail next to Anaheim Stadium. It is a great trail to run for a guy (wouldn't do it alone as a woman) with lots of dirt and goes forever in both directions without any signals and mile markers are even marked on one side of the trail.
The homeless population along the river and inside the riverbed has exploded in recent years. Just about every underpass there are tents and all sorts of junk and bike parts. I swear the homeless along that bike trail have some weird fixation on bike parts.
Anyway, it is kind of weird running through their homes on the bike trail.
If they are up and about at their makeshift camp, do you acknowledge them and say hello or do you just keep going and do not make eye contact?
Yes, I know they are people. I guess it is a case by case thing. I figure some want to be left alone and others might have some mental illness and I don't want to deal with it on my run. On the other hand, it must suck to feel invisible.
Maybe not surprising but surprising to me is how many of the homeless that were hanging out were women. Maybe the guys were out panhandling or working and still don't have enough to rent a place. I always feel really bad for the dogs of the homeless.
But I did watch the third episode of High Maintenance episode about Grandpa and saw that a dog might enjoy the homeless lifestyle more than being locked up in a crate.
