Hi Guys,
RE: To run the Marathon or not
I'm training for a marathon, presently on week two of a three week taper, training went was o.k.
Last year I did the same program and build up races 10km, 10 mile and 13.1 miles, my club mates all posted PR using this system, I went the opposite direction and ran some of my slowest times for those distances, I was slow, exhausted at the end of each race and subsequently when I ran the marathon I hit the wall at 17 miles and suffered like a dog all the way home finished in approx. 4.00 hours, that was after an excellent base build up the previous winter and posting PR over all distances the previous spring.
This year I had to right that poor performance, I ran 7 plus miles every day, three days of intervals, tempo etc. and a long run every weekend, I started the marathon program stronger than ever, three months before this I ran a 10km in 42.16 a PR.
Once I started the program my times have fallen off a cliff, all three build up runs using some of the marathon route were the slowest times I have ever run, the same thing happened last year and I assume the taper would correct any fatigue, this year I am listening to my body and I'm unsure if I should run or not, my half time was 1.41, I'm usually a 1.36 or faster depending on the course run three specific runs to gauge my progress during the training program and all three were the slowest I have ever run. I included some farlek work this year to keep the speed in my legs, varying the pace from 5k to 21k but my pace is gone.
Has anyone some advice on whether I should do this or not?
